Tutorial: QWin Basics

Running QWin for the First Time

When you run QWin for the very first time, it will display the "Maintain QVCS Users" dialog box. In order to proceed, you must define at least one user to QWin. If you don't define a user, QWin exits after giving you a second chance to define a user.

Follow these steps to add a user to QWin:

  • Click on the "New" button.
  • In the "Add QVCS User" dialog box, enter your name, and click the OK button.
  • Your name will now appear on the list of users on the Maintain Users dialog box.

    Maintain Users Dialog

  • Click on the "Close" button. This will close the "Maintain Users" dialog box.
  • QWin will now display the QVCS Login dialog box. Don't enter a password, just click on the OK button. Initially, all QVCS users are created without passwords. You can add or change your password using the Admin→Change Password... dialog.

Once you've logged in, QWin will load completely, and you'll see the Tip of the Day dialog box and the main QWin window beneath it. The left pane of the window is the project tree control, which will have a single node: "QVCS Projects." The two panes on the right, the file list pane and the revision information pane, will both be blank as you don't yet have any files under version control. The bottom status bar will show your login name.

QWin Application

Now that you've logged into QWin for the first time, it's much easier to launch it the second time. If your QVCS user name matches your Windows user name, the application will log you in automatically. Otherwise, the log-in dialog will appear, and from there you can just click the OK button (unless you define a password).
